Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Media framing refers to the process by which news media shape the interpretation of events and issues through the selection and emphasis of specific aspects of a story. The framing of protests, for instance, can significantly influence public perception, determining whether they are viewed as legitimate expressions of dissent or as disruptive and violent activities (Oluwaseun & Abdullahi, 2024). In Kaduna North Local Government Area, protests have become a common avenue for expressing grievances, ranging from socio-economic concerns to political demands. The way these protests are framed by the media can either amplify their messages or delegitimize their causes (Bello & Garba, 2023). This study explores the influence of media framing on public perception of protests in Kaduna North, analyzing how different framing techniques affect societal attitudes and the narratives surrounding civic engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The framing of protests in the media can either support democratic ideals or undermine the legitimacy of civic actions. In Kaduna North, instances of protests being framed as violent or disruptive have contributed to negative public perceptions, often overshadowing the grievances and demands of the protesters (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). Despite the importance of media framing in shaping public opinion, limited research has been conducted on its impact in the context of Kaduna North. This study seeks to address this gap by examining how media framing influences public perception of protests and identifying strategies for promoting balanced and accurate reporting.
